The American Dream in The Great Gatsby

Fitzgerald’s novel is often read as a celebration of ambition, but the story it tells is closer to a warning. Each of its central figures reaches for a version of the American Dream, and each discovers that the thing they wanted has already slipped out of reach by the time they arrive.

Gatsby’s mansion, his parties, and his carefully rehearsed past are all built for a single audience. The green light at the end of Daisy’s dock becomes the clearest symbol of this: something bright, close enough to see, and never quite close enough to hold.

Tom and Daisy, by contrast, already possess what Gatsby is chasing, and the novel is unsparing about what that possession has done to them.
